How it works

Each year your balance grows as: newBalance = (oldBalance + yearlyDeposit) × 1.071

Example: ₹1.5L/year for 15 years → total deposited ₹22.5L, maturity ≈ ₹40.68 lakh, interest earned ₹18.18 lakh (all tax-free).

FAQs

What is the PPF interest rate today?

The PPF rate is 7.1% p.a. for FY 2025–26 (set by the Ministry of Finance, reviewed quarterly). Interest is compounded annually.

Can I invest more than ₹1.5 lakh per year?

No. The maximum deposit is ₹1,50,000 per financial year (combining all accounts you hold). Exceeding this earns 0% interest on the excess.

Is PPF interest tax-free?

Yes — fully EEE (Exempt at contribution, accrual, withdrawal). Deposit qualifies under 80C, interest is tax-free, maturity amount is tax-free.

Can I extend PPF after 15 years?

Yes, in 5-year blocks, any number of times. You can extend with or without fresh contributions.

Can I withdraw early?

Partial withdrawal allowed from year 7 (up to 50% of the balance at end of year 4). Full premature closure allowed after 5 years in specific cases (higher education, medical, NRI status).
